About a week ago, we surveyed our developer audience to better understand the impact of Generative AI and how it is impacting their daily work.
This week’s newsletter captures the insights we gathered from these 750+ participants. Check it out👇
1. Are Developers even using Generative AI?
The answer to this question should be obvious by now but we’ll let the stats speak for itself.
Based on the survey - 70% of the participants who took this survey claimed that they use ChatGPT and similar Generative AI tools in their daily work.
Amongst these folks, 70% claimed that ChatGPT has proven to be very useful in their work and has made things a whole lot easier.
2. Okay! Generative AI has wide adoption. But how often are developers using it in their daily work?
Amongst the people who said they use ChatGPT regularly, 76% of the folks said it clearly depends on the need of the hour and they rely on it only when it is needed.
However, 16% of these folks also claimed that their current work is heavily dependent on these tools and is incomplete without them.
3. What’s the primary use case they’re using these tools for?
Generative AI has helped structure a lot of activites like content writing, code writing, documentation, communication, summarization, and more.
Based on the survey, it looks like 34% of the folks are using Generative AI tools to analyze and improve their code while 29% of the folks use tools like GitHub co-pilot for suggestions on the fly and write better code more efficiently.
4. Is Generative AI really that important?
Since these tools are still in the early stages of adoption, people are still figuring their way around these tools and hence, it isn’t surprising to see the majority (36%) of the participants saying that it is only somewhat important.
However, a significant (and close) number of participants also mentioned that it is pretty important in their work which also (sorta) indicates towards the changing ecosystem.
~5% of the folks claimed that they think these tools are unimportant and don’t add any value at all.
(If you have similar thoughts, we’d love to know why you think this is true and why you don’t want to adopt Generative AI in your work. Leave your thoughts in the comments below and we’ll check it out😃)
5. All this is cool but how are organizations reciprocating to this change?
When a tool is making you more efficient at your work, why would an organization deny using it?
36% of the folks who participated claim that they’re encouraged to dwell in Generative AI and are prompted to use these tools more by their organization, while 34% of the folks claimed that there weren’t any official statements or policies created for or against its usage and it currently remains unregulated at their organization.
Conclusion
Based on all the stats we’ve collected and the trends we’ve been seeing, it looks like while Generative AI is in its nascent stages of development, we are already seeing some insane feats it is capable of and how it is making work more efficient.
Companies out there are already moving towards empowering their employees and customers using Generative AI tools wherever possible and are constantly innovating to make the best out of this.
Given the fast-growing adoption, regular updates & iterations, and the increasing scope of Generative AI, it is safe to assume that it is here to stay and potentially disrupt the way we work.
In the coming days, it looks like being able to navigate your work with Generative AI tools will be a mandatory skill for every developer to have and in this age of change, those who fail to adapt will become irrelevant very soon!
